December 2007
Our athletes of the year for 2007 are John Canny and Eileen O’Brien. Eileen O’Brien is one of the clubs most committed members. She has taken on several roles over the year including Chairperson and coaching the Women’s Mini Marathon. She has also run brilliantly in the last 12 months and picked gold medals in many races across the country, most notably gold in the National Marathon Championships held in conjunction with the Dublin Marathon. John Canny joined the club in April 2007 and has showed commitment to both his training and to the club. Highlights of his performances include the Edinburgh Marathon where he broke 3 hours and the Dublin Marathon which he completed in 2:56. John is a versatile runner and has also represented the club in the National Track Relay 800m event as well as showing a strong performance in the Tom Byrne 5K where he was the first Lucan athlete to finish. John really hasn’t missed a turn this year. Congratulations to both on their outstanding achievements.

Winners of our hotly contested annual Turkey Trot League are Gareth Fereday and Derval McCarthy. In the combined team events Bernie Stapleton and Deirdre Coonahan came first followed by Emer McCarthy and Freda Comiskey. There were three races in the series: 3000m, 1500m and 800m. David Keogh (9:43) and Derval McCarthy (13:01) won the 3000m. Derval also won the 800m and the 1500m in the women’s race. However, the race of year was the men’s 800m which was won by John Canny 2.12 followed by Gerry Byrne in 2.14, Gareth Fereday 2:14 and, men's coach, Colm O’Connor. The league was a great success with the biggest turn out ever with around 40 athletes competing at every distance.
Continuing on with the Christmas spirit, Lucan Harriers hosted our Annual Goal Mile held on Christmas Morning. Over 4,300 euro was raised for the Charity. There was a great turn out and a very festive atmosphere at the track on Christmas morning. Thanks to all who made the event a great success.
On Sun 9th Dec, Lucan Harriers hosted the latest in the Meet & Train 2 mile Cross Country race series. The Club had 15 runners and all produced great runs in front of the home crowd. Derval McCarthy finished in a magnificent 5th position, her best result ever. Bernie Stapleton had one of her best ever runs with a 17th position finish. With Freda Comiskey in 25th, Deirdre in 29th, Emer McCarthy in 30th, Myra Nolan in 34th, Lorraine Heffernan in 41st, Amber Nugent in 43rd, Claire Buckley in 58th, Sinead Murphy in 63rd, Patricia in 69th, Noelle Dunne in 71st, Susie Devaney in 72nd, Winifred in 76th and Barbara in 78th, Lucan teams were well up in the various team categories. More complete team results to follow shortly. Well done to all and a special thank you to everyone who helped out with tea and coffee after the race.

This was Ann's first call-up to the National Masters team in a few years and she did herself and the club proud in the match amongst the Home Countries -- England v Ireland v Northern Ireland v Scotland v Wales. Ann continues to set a great example for all at the club. Congratulations Ann!!

Well done everyone.

Tara Andrews finished 4th in the U11 800M and qualified for the National Championships in Dungarvan. David Keogh placed 16th overall in the junior men's race with Simon Doyle close in arrears in 22nd position. The U19 men's race was also held within the junior men's race, so when all of the older competitors were extracted from the results, David placed 8th overall in his own age-group (U19). Congratulations to all.
Oct 2007
On Mon 29th Oct, Eileen O'Brien took the Gold medal in her category at the National Marathon Championships.
Eileen is a perennial medallist in these Championships held in conjunction with the Dublin City Marathon. Two years ago, Eileen was a gold medallist in her category and last year Eileen took the silver in the category. Great to see Eileen back at the top of the podium!! More complete report below.
On Mon 29th Oct, Lucan Harriers' Senior Women's team took the Bronze Medal in the National Championship Marathon.
Congratulations to the Lucan Harriers senior ladies team who took the Bronze medal in the National Marathon Championship which was run this year as part of the Dublin Marathon. The team of Myra Nolan, Eileen O'Brien and Lorraine Heffernan were delighted on hearing the news on Tuesday evening. More complete report below.

Lucan Harriers had 11 representatives competing in the Adidas Dublin City Marahon on Bank Holiday Monday. John Canny had his second outing over the distance this year and he produced an excellent time of 2 hours 56 mins. This bettered his Edinburgh time earlier this year by 4 minutes. John was followed home by Henry Langton who finished in a time of 3 hrs 4 minutes. David O'Doherty, taking part in his first marathon completed the course in a very respectable 3 hours 14 minutes. David only took up athletics in the past eight months and this time reflects the time and effort he has put in to training. This men's section is really going from strength to strength.
On the ladies front, Myra Nolan posted an excellent time of 3hrs 38 mins. This was a little down on her 3.35 she ran in Cork earlier in the year however the Dublin course is considered particularly difficult. Eileen O'Brien, a well known face around Lucan, finished in an excellent time of 3.52. Eileen, who is a stalwart of the Club, continues to set the standard for men and women in the club. Her gold medal in her age category of the National Championship Marathon (held in conjunction with the Dublin Marathon) is just reqard for all her efforts with the club. Angela Brennan had a great run finishing in a very commendable 4 hours 3 mins. Lorraine Heffernan was a little down on her time fro last year but none the less finished in a very credible 4.06 and she was accompanied home by Fiona Kearney who also crossed the line in the same time. Deirdre Coonahan was next home in a time of 4.11.

Picture right shows Conor McGee coming into the finish of the Tarrytown 4 mile road race in New York on Sun 11th Nov 2007.
The two happiest faces crossing the line this year were Carina McGoldrick and Kim Kilduff who finished in 4.40 and 4.40 respectively. These two young ladies are only running a short time and this was their first marathon experience. No doubt next year will bring more improvement.
While there were 11 Club members participating in the race itself, Lucan Harriers also provided 26 stewards on the course who ensured that the participants had safe passage from Hanlons Corner on the North Circular Road, through the Phoenix Park and across the bridge at Chapelizod. A special 'thank you' to those stewards who got out of their beds at 7am on the Bank holiday to assist with the race.
On Sun Oct 21st, Lucan's juvenile athletes had some fine results at the Dublin juvenile Cross Country League in the Phoenix Park. Sean Townsend is following in his older brother's footsteps with some great results. This time Sean was 1st in the U10 race. Tara Andrews is flying this winter, just like last year and she was 2nd in the girl's U10 race. Traodhbhealach Hopper is improving all the time and he placed an impressive 6th in the U15 race. Juliet Sejan is combining a number of sports at the weekend but she was still 9th in the U13 race. Other participants were Edward Grimes, John Grimes, Nicola and Conor Martin. Well done to all.
On Sun Oct 21st, Conor McGee won the Harry Chaplin 10K Run in Croton-Harmon, New York. On a very hilly course he posted a time of 33.50 which was the fastest time run on the course in 20 years. On a separate issue the Club would like to wish the best of luck to Conor and Erin who get married in New York next week.

Picture shows club member Conor McGee and Erin Whalen on their wedding day in New York on Oct 27th 2007.
On Sat 20th Oct, Lucan athletes competed in the Secondary Teachers-sponsored BHAA 4 mile cross country at Castleknock. Joe Corcoran finished 2nd in his category in a time of 22.53. Gerry Byrne continues to show improvement finishing in a time of 24.35 with club regular Jim Dwyer finishing in a time of 34.39. Well done to all.

On Sat 13th Oct, Hilary McGee ran in the Simon 5 mile road race in Phoenix Park. Hilary had a great running, finishing in a time of 35.51. Well done Hilary.
On Sun 7th Oct, Lucan's athletes travelled to Rathfarnham for their annual 5K road race. This race is famous for being both flat and fast so it was a great opportunity for Lucan Harriers athletes to show the results of their summer training. John Canny was the first Lucan man home with another personal best of 16:36. This was nearly 20 seconds faster then the time he produced at Ringsend early in the season. John O’Leary followed with a time of 18:53 placing him 6th in the M50 category. Liz Arkins ran her first race in a while, but still produced a very impressive time of 22:18 giving her third place in the F50 category. Bernie Stapleton wasn’t far behind in a time of 22:37 (PB). Eileen O’Brien ran a time 23:33, placing her second place in the F55. Antoinette Holland finished in a time of (23:43) followed by Rosemary Charllan (26:14), Brid Fogarty (27:12) and Suzie Devaney (27:12). Well done to all!
Sept 2007
On Sun 30th Sept, Lorraine Heffernan traveled to Newcastle to take part in the Bupa Great North Run. Lorraine completed the race in 1 hour 51 minutes. This is a popular race and has over 28,000 runners covering the 13.1 miles. Due to the large numbers, Lorraine found the race very congested and therefore was unable to produce a personal best. She finished feeling very comfortable with the pace. Earlier this year Lorraine completed the Prague half marathon in just over 1 hour 43 minutes. Lorraine now has 4 weeks to go before the Dublin marathon. Preparing also are Lorraine's clubmates and training partners, Myra Nolan and Emer McCarthy. Lorraine enjoyed the race and looks forward to running in it again. Well done Lorraine.
On Sat 22nd Sept, eight of Lucan's women took part in the Dublin Half Marathon in the Phoenix Park. Eileen O’Brien came in first in a time of 1:45. This was not Eileen’s best time but there were plenty of hills at the end of the course to slow the runners down. (Official results are not yet in, but we will wait and see if Eileen picks up a prize). Claire Buckley ran an impressive time of 1:56 betting her personal best of 1:57 for a half marathon. Bernie Doyle produced a time of 2:08 and though it was a few minutes short of her personal best (2:02) she was happy with the run and didn’t find it too tough. Kim and Stephanie Caufield are both hoping to run the full marathon in October so they were using this as a training run. The girls took it easy and finished in a time of just over 2:15. Newcomers to running, Susie Devenay and Barbara Whelan finished in a time of 2:28. This was both their first half marathons and they have both trained consistently over the summer for this race. Well done to all.

On Sat 8th Sept, Lucan athletes ran in the CitySwift 10 mile road race in Rathcoole. Derval McCarthy was first from Lucan to finish in with a time of 1:15:26. Bernie Stapleton produced an impressive time of 1:19:45 and was followed closely behind by Eileen O’Brien in 1:20:34. Claire Buckley finished the race in a time of 1:27:15. Well done to all.

Aug 2007
On Wed 29th Aug, Bernie Stapleton was first in her category in the Eagle Star 2 mile race at Irishtown Stadium. Bernie placed 3rd in the race with a season’s best of 14:06. Well done Bernie.
Full results.
On Sun 26th Aug, Lucan athletes ran in the Longford Half Marathon. Ann McGee again showed great stamina and came first in her age category in a time of 2:14. Also running was Nina Celis who finished in a time of 2:12 and she was followed by Patricia Daly who also completed the race in 2:12. Stephanie Caulfield wasn’t two far behind the girls in a time of 2:19. Also running their first half marathon on the day were Brid and Carnia Heart. Well done to all the girls.
On Sat 25th Aug, David Keogh revised his 800m personal best time in the British Milers Club Meet in Crystal Palace. Employing some familiar tactics in the section 'F' 800m, David took over the lead from the pacemaker after an opening 400m of 56 seconds. David led until the last 3 metres of the race, but was nonetheless rewarded with a fine new personal best of 1:56.56, over a second inside his previous personal best run a fortnight ago. Congratulations David on some great running.
Full results.
On Tue 21st Aug, Fintan McGee ran yet another personal best, this time over 800m, in the BMC Gold Standard Meet in Trafford. Fintan placed a very close 4th in the 'B' section 800m with a cracking time of 1:52.9 to wipe out his previous lifetime best time of 1:53.6 from 7 years ago. This is great running from Fintan who has had an astonishing year. It's easy to forget that Fintan missed 6 weeks through injury between February and March. The club senior 800m record by Damien Joyce (also the club junior record) still stands at 1:52.88. No doubt Fintan will be going after that in the near future. Congratulations again Fintan.
Full results.
On Wed 15th Aug, Bernie Stapleton ran a season's best in the Irish Life and Permanent-sponsored BHAA track 3,000m in Ringsend. Bernie, our women's captain, placed 2nd in her section of the 3000m with a fine time of 13:14. Well done Bernie.

On Sat 11th Aug, Lucan athletes ran well in the Streets of Galway 8km road race in Galway. Tommy Buggle is back with a vengeance and he produced a lifetime best (we believe) in recording a time of 28:14 for the distance. Tommy was closely followed by the very consistent John Canny who clocked 28:29. Colm O'Connor recorded 31:19 and this run will be good preparation for him as he gets ready for the National Masters T&F Championships next weekend. Colm was 5th in the Masters National Indoor 1500m back in January so no doubt we will see his good run of results continue. Hilary McGee finished in a personal best time of 34:33 and she expressed herself very happy with her run. Ann McGee, one of the stalwarts of Lucan Harriers over the last twenty years or so, finished looking very relaxed in 47:10. Well done to all.

On Sat 11th Aug, David Keogh and Fintan McGee both produced personal best performances in the British Milers Club Meet in Stretford, Manchester. David ran in the section 'H' 800m in this very high quality meet. David took over the lead after 400m and led from there to the finish. His winning time of 1:57.6 (still awaiting official confirmation) hacks over a second and a half from his previous best. Congratulations, David, on this well deserved breakthrough. For the 1500m, Fintan was one of three athletes selected to represent the Irish Miler's Club in a match against a trio from each the Welsh, Scottish and English Miler's Clubs. Fintan produced a brilliant run to place 6th in the 'A' section 1500m in a new personal best of 3:48.34. This time revises the Lucan record Fintan set for the distance only a fortnight ago in Belgium. Fantastic running, Fintan. Congratulations to both of our athletes on their very successful seasons.
More.
On Wed 1st Aug, all Lucan athletes competing were in top form at the Dublin Graded Meet in Santry. Fresh from his 3:48 1500m the previous Saturday night, Fintan McGee placed a close 4th in the 'a' section 3000m in a new personal best time of 8:26.62. John Canny had a fantastic win the section 'c' 3000m in a new personal best time of 9:40.47. David Keogh recorded a well deserved new personal best when he ran 1:59.16 for 4th place in the 'a' section 800m. Simon Doyle ran 2:04.81 for 8th place in the section 'a '800m also, as he edges back towards his best time of 2:02. And Michael Dunne was agonisingly close to his season's best time when he clocked 2:18.03 in placing 7th in the section 'c' 800m. There's nothing better than seeing all these athletes performing at their best. Well done to all.

July 2007
On Sun 29th July, David Keogh and Simon Doyle put in good 800m performances as guest runners at the National League in Santry. On another blustery day, David again recorded a time close to his best -- 1:59.8 -- with Simon running 2:05.7. Well done guys. Weather conditions will hopefully be more favourable next time out.
On Sat 28th July, Sinead Dowling placed 6th in the final of the U18 200m on weekend two of the AAI National Juvenile T&F Championships in Tullamore. Sinead recorded a time of 27.59 in qualification for the final, and then in the final posted a time of 28.11. This was a great series of runs, all on the same day. Sinead adds this result to her 6th place finish in the 100m a fortnight ago. Fantastic running, Sinead!!
Results.
On Sat 28th July, Fintan McGee destroyed the club 1500m record at the KBC Night of Athletics in Heusden, Belgium. Fintan recorded a tremendous time of 3:48.66 to win his section of the 1500m at the meet. Fintan followed the pace through the opening kilometre and felt strong throughout. He took the lead with 400m to go and ran a final lap of 58 seconds to win the race by over a second. This is sensational running from Fintan, his time knocking almost 3 full seconds off the previous Lucan record (also held by Fintan since 2005). Fintan has run five 1500m races this year, winning three of them. His only defeats were in the heats of the National championships (2nd) and in the final of the National Championships (5th). Even still, Fintan feels there is still more to come this season! Congratulations Fintan on a well deserved result.

On Thur 26th July, the 2007 Lucan Harriers Club Road Championships were won by Derval McCarthy and Tommy Buggle. Derval completed the 2 mile course in 12:08 while Tommy ran the men’s 3 mile race in an impressive time of 15:06. Freda Comiskey was second in the women's race with a time of 12:59. Freda has not been running for a while due to injury so it was great to see her back. Myra Nolan took time out from her marathon training to take third place and she was followed by Eithne Reid. Emmer McCarthy and Lorraine also taking a break from their long runs came 5th and 6th respectively. this time they were only separated by a second. In total 17 women ran on the day. It was great to see, men's captain, Tommy Buggle back to full strength after being out injured for approximately 6 months. Tommy showed all his qualities as he dominated to win very convincingly. John Canny showed another great performance and finished second with a time of 15:20. It was a battle for third place between Colm O’Connor Liam Cleary, but in the end Colm secured third place with a strong finish. David McCarthy was 5th followed by Dave Doherty. Next week the Club handicap will be held. This means that those who won the Championship will be starting from the back. And those members whose legs are a little slower will have the honour of starting first. The handicap will be a good test for all athletes.

On Wed 25th July, John Canny placed a fantastic 15th in the Dublin City Council-sponsored BHAA 5km road race in Ringsend. John also dipped under 17 minutes with his finishing time of 16:55. Great to see John continuing to run so well. Congratulations again, John.

Men's Section Going From Strength to Strength
In adding John Canny to the mix of athletes we already have, our men's section are hoping to make an even bigger impact in the Dublin Novice Cross Country Championships at the end of Sept/start of Oct, where last year our men's novice team placed 5th (-- individual places were David Keogh 8th, Ciaran Hopper 9th, Tommy Buggle 14th, Michael Dunne 31st). This success at the start of last year has spurred on the men's section to many great results through the year. David Keogh (silver U19 800m) and Simon Doyle (bronze Junior (U20) 1500m) both won medals in National Indoor competitions in March/April. Our men's senior team (David Keogh, Simon Doyle, Conor McGee, Fintan McGee) placed 5th in the National Senior Road Relays in April with our men's masters team ( Colm O'Connor (men's coach), Stephen McCarthy, Joe Corcoran) placing 11th in the Men's Masters National Road Relay Championship on the same day. In June, our men's senior team (David Keogh, Simon Doyle, John Canny) placed 3rd in the National Track Relay Championship 3*800m. Individually there have been many successes too, with Fintan McGee an outstanding 5th in the National Senior 1500m Championship in July and Colm O'Connor 5th in the Men's Masters Indoor 1500m Championship in January. And only two weeks ago, we had an outstanding gold medal from Conor McCrossan in the U18 110m hurdles at the National Championships. This year, with the hoped-for return of inspirational men's captain Tommy Buggle, the team can definitely build on the successes of last year.
On Sun 22nd July, Fintan McGee placed a brilliant 5th in the 1500m final while Conor McGee ran a season's best 5,000m on Day Two of the National Senior T&F Championships in Santry. Conor went out hard in the 5,000m and went through the mile in 4:40 and 3k in 8:59. Conor was falling back at that stage but battled to a time of 15:14.71, another improvement for the season. An hour later in pouring rain, Fintan McGee ran a tremendous race in the 1500m final. Positioned in the top 6 athletes throughout the race, the pack passed the 800m mark in 2:05. 100m later (at approximately 600m to go), Mark Christie of Mullingar made a long strike for home. Over the next 200m or so, the medalists separated themselves from the rest of the field. Fintan was in 6th position at the bell. Around the last lap, athletes passed and re-passed each other and Fintan muscled his way into 5th place in the closing 50m of the race. His finish time was a season's best (3:51.84) and just a fraction outside his personal best (3:51.59). A great race and hopefully Fintan can bring the confidence from this result to his next few races and a sub 3:50 clocking. Congratulations Fintan!!

On Sat 21st July, Fintan McGee qualified for the 1500m final while David Keogh produced a season's best 800m on Day One of the National Senior T&F Championships in Santry. Fintan produced one of his most impressive runs ever to finish in second place in his heat in a time of 3:54.38. The final of the blue riband event (-- the 1500m -- ) is at 3pm tomorrow and we are hoping to see another good run from Fintan. David Keogh has got a second wind to his season and he showed what a tough competitor he is in running a season's best time of 1:59.48. This time is only 15 hundredths outside David's lifetime best so we are hoping that he can produce a pb from his next outing. Now that his leaving cert exams are well and truly over, he can relax and reap the rewards on his good winter's training and racing. Unfortunately David was not able to reach the 800m final, but at 18 years old, he has plenty of time. Well done to both on a great day.

On Sun 15th July, Sinead Dowling placed 6th in the U18 100m on weekend one of the AAI National Juvenile T&F Championships in Tullamore. Sinead recorded a season's best time of 13.13 seconds. Sinead has been (and continues to be) one of Lucan's top athletes over the best part of the last decade -- it's kind of funny saying that since she is still only 17! Sinead has won Dublin titles and Leinster titles (just like Conor McCrossan). As with Conor McCrossan, Sinead has very supportive parents who make weekly trips with her to Santry Stadium all year round for training. Sinead is a great example to all at Lucan Harriers. We all hope to see her on the podium in a National Championship soon. Great run Sinead.

On Sat 14th July, Conor McCrossan won the AAI National U18 110m Hurdles title in Tullamore.
On Sat 14th July, Conor McCrossan won the AAI National U18 110m Hurdles title in Tullamore. This is a fantastic achievement, and Conor's first national title. Conor's time of 15.45 seconds is a season's best. His improvement over the last 6 weeks (since the All-Ireland Schools Championships where Conor was 5th) is very clear when you compare his time over the 100m hurdles to this run over the 110m hurdles. This run is far superior. Conor does much of his practice over hurdles which his very supportive father, John, has made by hand. It just goes to show that with the right attitude, big results are possible. Conor is no stranger to titles having collected (between schools and club competitions) multiple Dublin and Leinster titles over the past few years. He has served his time coming through the ranks. Now Conor has made that next step. Fantastic run Conor!!

On Sat 14th July, Stephen McCarthy finished the National Triathlon Championships in
Athlone. According to Stephen he produced a heroic swim somewhere in the middle of the
Shannon where Stephen decided it would be a good idea to drink most of it,
before hitting the bike & finally a chance to do what Stephen is genuinely good
at i.e run. In the run Stephen past hundreds, (we have no proof of this!).
Well done Stephen & lets hope that all this endurance training will stand you in
good stead for the upcoming cross country season.
On Wed 11th July, Conor McGee ran a season's best 1500m at the Gold Standard British Milers Club races in Watford. Conor placed 7th in the 'B' 1500m with a time of 4:01.66. With just 10 days to go until Conor will contest the 5000m at the National Senior Championships, this confidence boosting run could not have come at a better time. Well done Conor.
On Sun 8th July, David Keogh and Simon Doyle competed at the National Junior Championships in Tullamore. In very changeable conditions, David Keogh placed 9th in the 800m in 2:03.12 while Simon Doyle was 13th in the 1500m with a time of 4:25.44. Neither athlete challenged their best times on this occasion, understandable since they have each just recently finished their leaving cert exams. Considering that David placed 5th in these Championships last year (and he will still be in this same age-group in 2008) and Simon was 3rd in the National Junior Indoor 1500m Championships this spring, it's apparent that we have two very ambitious young athletes here who will, we're sure, bounce back with some great running in the next few weeks. Keep your eye on the ball for the next few weeks and the times will come. Well done lads.

On Sat 7th July, Fintan McGee won his 1500m at the Leon Buyle Memorial track meet in Oordegem, Belgium. This was yet another season's best performance from Fintan in a time of 3:52.39. This is Fintan's second best time ever over 1500m and is less than a second outside his lifetime best (and Lucan record) of 3:51.59 set in 2005. There is no doubt that Fintan will be revising these figures within the next few months. Great running Fintan.

On Sat 7th July, Conor McGee ran a season's best 5,000m in the British League in Birmingham. In blustery conditions, Conor posted a time of 15:16.91 in the race, an improvement of some 8 seconds from his other 5,000m track outing this season, three weeks ago. Well done Conor on a good run.

On Wed 4th July, John Canny had a win while Colm O'Connor and Marie McNamara placed third at the Dublin Graded Meet in Santry. Having finished 3rd & 2nd in his previous races, John took up the running with 600m to go in the section 'C' mile with clubmate (and men's coach) Colm O'Connor hot on his heels. The two of them stretched away from the field only for John to break Colm in the final 150m. John held on to win in 4:51.84 with Colm in 3rd place in 4:54.64. meanwhile, in the field events, Marie McNamara placed an excellent 3rd in the women's high jump with a leap of 1.60metres. Well done to all.

On Sat 30th June, Sinead Murphy ran the Achill half marathon. This is the second year the race was run in aid of the charity Silent Masses. The hilly course was tough and this prevented any hopes of a personal best from Sinead. She did however, feel she ran the race well and is hoping to improve on her time in coming few months.
On Sat 30th June, David O'Doherty ran his first race ever in Dunshaughlin along with Stephen Rynne. David was delighted with his time of 41.04 for the 10K distance, Stephen was hoping for faster than his 42.26 but feels there is a fast time in him over the coming weeks. David used the race as a test for upcoming races and that’s probably true as Stephen had to tell him to stop talking in the first half of the race! Well done lads.
On Sat 30th June, Fintan McGee ran the 3km steeplechase at the British Milers' Club Meet in Watford. Fintan ran a time of 9:36.33 and he is now looking forward to contesting the steeplechase at the National Championships in 3 weeks' time. Well done Fintan.

On Wed 27th June, Lucan Harriers athletes produced a win, a second and a third at the Dublin Graded Meet in Irishtown Stadium, Ringsend. Colm O'Connor won his first ever grade C race (after 5 years of trying!) with a smooth win in the 800m in a time of 2.12.31. Michael Dunne finished 3rd in 2.17.74, but Michael was feeling the effects of his terrific run just the night before. John Canny finished 2nd in the grade C 3,000m in a time of 9:48.54 but should have been celebrating a win as the lad who won should really have been competing in grade B or even grade A!. John took his time and crept in to contention over the last 3 laps & then had a great battle with a runner from cork over the last 600m before he showed the benefit of his recent 800m runs by proving the stronger on the home straight. Gerry Byrne posted a time of 2.26.51 for 6th place in the grade D 800m and is obviously getting stronger as the season progresses.
Just a quick note of appreciation for this graded series from us at Lucan Harriers. There was runners from as far as Donegal & Cork competing in John's 3,000m on Wednesday night, which just shows the quality of races that nights like Wednesday produces & the lengths that athletes will go to find suitable track races.

On Sun 24th June, our men's senior team (David Keogh, Simon Doyle, John Canny) placed 3rd in the National Track Relays 3 * 800m in Cork. This is a great achievement for a young developing team. Considering that David and Simon are junior athletes (recently having finished their leaving certs) and John is running his first track season, this makes this an even more remarkable result. Although unable to match the Leevale (gold) and Togher (silver) squads on this occasion, their time of 6:14.3(H) was a good one and all our athletes are sure to be even better next year. It is also noteworthy that this is the first National Senior Medal for all of these athletes, a huge landmark in their running resumes. It looks like Lucan are really starting to develop some strength in depth amongst its senior men's section. Well done to all of our coaches at all levels and our committee members who have been working to make this happen for some time. In previous years, Lucan have placed 4th in this Championships in Kilkenny in 1995 (Damien Joyce, Errol Brennan, Conor McGee) and Lucan actually won the race in 2000 (Martin Fay, Fintan McGee, Conor McGee) in Santry from a very strong Rathfarnham squad. Hopefully now we can build on this success and make it an annual thing. Well done lads.

On Wed 20th June, the rain stopped for a few hours to allow the Juvenile sports day to go head. Not a drop of rain fell as 189 young athletes competed from Dublin and the neighbouring counties. In the younger age group both Nicola Orga and Lee picked up medals in the U8 60m sprint. Dale Singery got a bronze in the U9 60m and Jack Carey won gold in the U12 80m while Luke Hanlon won bronze in the same race. John Grimes came third in the U17 100m and Sean Townsend can an impressive first in the 500m U10. Juliet Sejean ran well to come third in the U13 600m and Toirdealbhach Hopper also came third in the U15 800m. John Grimes again won another medal in the U17 1500m, but this time taking home silver. Rachel Briggs and David Cooney both won a medal in the U12 ball throw. And finally Conor Martin and Joseph Cooney came first and second in the U17 shot putt. On Sun 17th June, Eithne Reid not only took part in her first ever triathlon in Sligo, but came 4th in the W40 category. She completed the race in an impressive 1hour 38minutes and said enjoyed every minute of it. The first part of the race involved a 750m swim and Eithne admitted to being in the last quarter of the field after this tough beginning. During the cycle she managed to increase her placing, but it was in the 5K uphill run to the finish that she really showed what she made of. It was the toughest 5k she had ever run, she confessed to this reporter during a very wet run the following Thursday. Other members of Lucan Harriers considering a triathlon will have to work hard to equal Eithne’s performance. Well done Eithne.
On Sat 16th/Sun 17th June, Lucan's young athletes took a stack of medals home from the Dublin Juvenile T&F Championships in Santry. This was a very successful event for our young athletes with many of the youngsters competing in multiple events. Liam Townsend had a brilliant weekend winning three golds -- in the U19 triple jump, long jump and 400m. He also managed to take third place in the 200m. Tara Andrews also won in three different events -- the U11 long jump, ball throw and the 600metres. Luke Hanlon took his first ever Dublin title with gold in the U12 Long Jump. Sean Townsend won the U10 500m title, while Christian Collins took second place in the U11 60m. Luke Singery finished second in the U11 Ball Throw. Sinead Dowling, a perennial medallist, won silver in the U19 100m. Rachel Briggs, Shannon Browne, Chloe McGrane, Barry McGrane and Traodhbealach Hopper all participated in the championships as well, though this year they were outside the medals. All athletes gave 100% at the championships and have done Lucan proud. Well done to all.

On Wed 13th June, Conor McGee ran the 1500m at the British Milers' Club Gold Standard Meet in Watford. Conor ran a time of 4:09.92 for the distance. Conor is only just back into his training after a groin injury put him out for much of May, so we are sure to see him go better as he gets some races under his belt. Well done Conor.

On Sat 9th June, Fintan McGee placed 9th in his 3km steeplechase debut at the British Milers' Club Meet in Manchester. This experiment by Fintan to determine his suitability to the event was a resounding success. Fintan's time of 9:26 shows good promise. If he chooses this event as his primary focus for the season (and seasons to come), he will be following in the formidable footsteps of another top athlete from Lucan, the late Tom Byrne. In Lucan and farther afield, Tom is remembered very fondly in athletics and soccer circles. He was one of the founding members of Lucan Harriers A.C.. He coached soccer, coached athletics, and just for good measure, he was a national calibre athlete too. If only Tom were around today to offer his knowledge and insight in the event to Fintan. Well done Fintan on a very good run.

On Wed 6th June, Lucan athletes competed in the Dublin Graded T&F Meeting in Santry. New member, John Canny, is proving a real find and he had a great run placing a close 3rd in the section 'c' 1500m recording a very impressive time of 4:28.77. It sounded like half of lucan was shouting him home as he battled to the line! Brian Brunton returning to the track after an 18 month absence clocked a commendable (5:03.74), and he feels that he will go under 5 minutes next time as he ran very strong to the line. Gerry Byrne (5:12.28) was one place behind Brian and he can be delighted with his debut. Stephen Rynne set out to run inside 5.40 and did just that with a controlled 5:37.14 picking people off over the last two laps. Great to see our athletes starting so well and no doubt they will improve as the season goes on. Well done to all.

On Mon 4th June, the women’s Mini Marathon 10km road race was held in Dublin. In the miserable weather, 10 women from the Lucan women’s mini marathon group took on the challenge. These women have been training since March for this big race. Many of them have never run before so it was a great achievement for them. Hilary McGee was first to finish from Lucan with an excellent time of 44:12 minutes in a very impressive 88th position overall. Following her came Anna (55mins), Yvonne Donnellan (58min), Catriona (60mins), Susie Deraney (63mins), Corina McGoldrick (63 mins), Rian Gonzalez (64), Georgina (67mins) and Katie (84mins). The volume of runners in this race make the street very crowded so it difficult to run a personal best so well done to all the girls who ran.

On Mon 4th June, Myra Nolan finished 6th in her category in the Cork City marathon. Myra covered the 26.2 mile course in the excellent time of 3:32. It was a tough course with lots of hills but Myra still produced a great run and in doing so finished 6th in the over 35 category. Myra ran extremely well but, she had put in many months of training to achieve this. Also participating in the race were Lorraine Heffernan, Bernie Stapleton, Sinead Murphy, Claire Buckley, Evelyn McMahon and Bernie Doyle. However, these girls ran the marathon in relay teams of two, each runner talking on roughly thirteen miles. They all had a great race and ran well. This is the first time in over 20 years the Cork Marathon was run. It was a small field or runners with just over 1,600 running the entire race and over 700 relay teams. The weather made the race all the more enjoyable (as enjoyable as running 26 miles can be) and is definitely on the calendar for next year.

On Sun 3rd June, Colm O'Connor struck for a silver & bronze medal at the Leinster masters track & field Championships in Tullamore. Colm ran 2.10.9 to finish just behind the leaders in the 800m running his best time for two years at that distance. He also ran the 1500m but found that two races at top speed was a bit much and finished well behind his best time. With this result (combined with his 5th place finish in the National Masters Indoor 1500m), COlm is now firmly established as one of the country's top masters middle distance athletes. Well done Colm on another great run. Hopefully next year, Lucans team will include a fit Tommy Buggle & Stephen McCarthy, both more that capable of winning medals at these championships.

On Sat 2nd June, Conor McCrossan and Liam Townsend both competed in the Irish Schools Track and Field Championships in Tullamore. In difficult breezy conditions, Liam Townsend placed 6th in the U20 triple jump with a leap of 11.87metres. Well done to both athletes. This is the biggest event in Irish Athletics and both acquitted themselves admirably once again.

On Sat 2nd June, Fintan McGee won the 'B' section 1500m Irish Milers Club race in Tullamore. This run could not have been staged any better. Fintan's Lucan teammate, David Keogh, was the designated pacemaker for the race and he led the field through 800m in approx 2 mins 5 seconds. David stepped off the track at that point, his job done. About 200m later, Fintan took up the running and he held off all challenges to breast the tape in a time of 3:54.0. This is great running in the breezy conditions. Very well done Fintan.

On Tue 29th May, Lucan took a collection of individual prizes in the Bob Heffernan 5km road race in Enfield. Eileen O'Brien, our club chairperson, keeps churning out the results and this time, she won her age category in style with a time of 22:29. Hilary McGee had a great run placing 7th overall amongst the women (4th in the senior women category) with a time of 20:10. This race was one of Hilary's best road results and should set her up very nicely for the women's mini marathon (10km) race in Dublin at the weekend. Derval McCarthy had a fantastic run clocking 20:30 for 2nd place in her age category, and 10th in the overall women's category. Susie Devaney took 2nd prize in her age-category in a time of 28:19. Meanwhile, Michael Dunne recorded a new personal best run of 17:05, his umpteenth pb in the last 12 months. We also had Myra Nolan running, her last preparation race before the Cork City Marathon this coming weekend. Ann McGee and a slew of our mini marathoners also ran well. Well done to all.
On Sun 27th May, Fintan McGee placed 5th in the 3000m at the AAI Games in Sligo. On a very blustery day on the Sligo I.T. track, Fintan had a very good run amongst some of the best runners in the country. Times were secondary as the athletes were buffeted by strong winds. Even so, Fintan's time of 8:42.57 was a good one, a time he will no doubt improve upon later in the season. Well done Fintan.

On Sat 26th May, Eileen O'Brien won her category with Bernie Stapleton also running the Intel-sponsored BHAA 8km road race in Leixlip. Ladies captain, Bernie recorded another good time (37.19). Bernie is having a busy but successful season. Club chairperson, Eileen O’Brien, (36.49) won her category with another top run. Eileen is having a great season and continually races well. She is also running in the Bob Heffernan race in Enfield on Tuesday the 29th of May. In previous years Eileen has picked up first place at this even so we will be watching out for her on night. Well done to both.
On Thur 24th May, Lucan's athletes went to Irishtown Stadium to collect their prizes for the Meet and Train League. Derval McCarthy’s excellent performances during the meet and train league earned her first place in her category according to the offical results released on Thursday at the Irishtown track night. Derval ran three great races during the league with times of 26.55, 20.10 and 13.03 over 4 miles, 3 miles and 2 miles respectively. Also taking home gold was the Lucan B team who came first in the bronze category (Emmer McCarthy, Maisie McGlone, Bernie Doyle, Yvonne Donnellan and Myra Nolan). Well done to all!

On Wed 23rd May, Fintan McGee, David Keogh and Simon Doyle all ran well in the 800m at the Dublin Graded Meet in Santry. Due to the number of top athletes at the Meet, the 'A' section 800m was divided into two separate races. Fintan placed joint 2nd in his race in a very good time to start his season, 1:55.93. Simon Doyle placed 8th in the same race in 2:02.30, great running in his debut at the 800m. David Keogh placed 6th in the other race with another good run (1:59.83). Well done to all on very good runs.

On Sat 19th May, Conor McCrossan won while David Keogh and Liam Townsend produced some outstanding runs at the Leinster Schools Championships in Santry. Conor produced a great run to win the U17 110m hurdles in a time of 15.00 seconds. This run qualifies Conor for the Irish Schools Championships in Tullamore in two weeks time. Also, Conor has been selected as a member of the Leinster Schools Team to contest the Tailteann Games Interprovincial later in June. The Tailteann Games will serve as the Trial for the Irish Schools Team U17 for the Schools U17 International T&F Championships. Good luck to Conor in all those competitions, and hopefully he can make the Irish Schools Team. That would be a huge achievement, and would emulate David Keogh's selection to the Irish Schools U17 team two years ago. This time, David placed 4th in the U20 1500m in a time of 4:04. David gave everything as always and went to the front with 650m to go and took the wind on a blustery day. David was passed by two athletes as the bell rang with a lap to go. He remained in 3rd place until 130m to go when he was passed. David responded and came back at the 3rd placed athlete down the stretch but just could not find the extra bit he needed to propel himself back into 3rd place. Liam Townsend placed 4th in the U20 400m in an outstanding 50.4 seconds, one of the fastest times ever run by a Lucan athlete. Liam was very disappointed that he just missed out on a medalin the 400m. However, Liam picked up a bronze medal in the triple jump and this qualifies him for the Irish Schools Championships in Tullamore also. As well as being a talented triple jumper, we believe that Liam has all the credentials to be a top 400m runner. Liam is a former National Community Games 100m Champion and he now looks like he is rediscovering that form. Well done to both athletes. They will no doubt run even faster as the summer progresses.

On Thur 17th May, Lucan athletes were to the fore at the Trinity Track BHAA Meet. Michael Dunne, showing little signs of fatigue from his race on the previous evening, placed 2nd in the very exciting 'A' section 2 mile race. This time the athletes basked in the sunshine on a warm summer's evening. Colm O'Connor placed 2nd in the section 'B' mile in another great race and Stephen McCarthy won the section 'C' 800m in a thrilling finish. All in all it was a very enjoyable evening and our athletes were all very happy with their performances. Well done lads.
On Wed 16th May, Lucan athletes performed well at the Dublin Graded Meet in Santry. Simon Doyle ran a new personal best 4:16 for 1500m in the development race. Michael Dunne ran a 4:59 mile in section 'C'. Both are very happy with their runs in wet and windy conditions. Well done guys.
On Wed 16th May, the final road race of the Women’s Meet and Train League was held in the Phoenix Park. 124 women covered the four mile course in the Phoenix Park. Also running well on the evening were Bernie Doyle (33.03), Evelyn McMahon (33.52), Sinead Murphy (33.58), Ann McGee (35.31) Yvonne Donnellan (35.31) and Rian Gonzalez (38.21). 2007 Tom Byrne Memorial 5km Champions -- Thomas Fitzpatrick (Tallaght A.C.), Mary Hanley (Na Fianna A.C.)
On Wed 9th May, the 2007 winners of the Tom Byrne 5km races were Thomas Fitpatrick from Tallaght A.C. and Mary Hanley of Na Fianna A.C. Thomas posted a time of 15:34 to beat last year's "new course" course record. Thomas is back in the sport after a few years away from athletics and he seems to be really coming back with a vengeance in recent months. Mary Hanley has been a regular feature in this race in recent years so it was great to see her take home the top prize. Her time was a very good one -- 17:59. The winners of the Tom Byrne Memorial Perpetual Trophies for first local athletes went to John Canny of Lucan Harriers A.C. (17:07) and Eileen Dalton of Sportsworld A.C. (20:44). Many of Lucan's athletes were out on the course ensuring that the event ran smoothly, but we were nevertheless well represented in the race itself also. Michael Dunne (17:25), Colm O'Connor (18:20), Stephen McCarthy (18:43), Derval McCarthy (21:10), new member Miriam Dillon (21:44), Myra Nolan (22:23) and women's captain, Bernie Stapleton, (23:11) all ran well. Well done to all who participated and thanks to all who contributed. Hopefully we will see everyone back again next year.

These were two fine performances from David and he now moves through to the Leinster Schools Championships on May 17th where the best athletes from the four regions of Leinster (N, S, E and W) will face one another. Well done, David.

It turned out to be quite a tactical race for third spot and unfortunately Simon lost out on the run-in for third place in a time of 4:34. Times don't matter in Championship running and it is often a huge burn-up on the final lap of these 1500m races. Simon was very disappointed afterwards but West Leinster is historically a very strong region and many of the best young athletes in the country run in this region. Last year's All Ireland Schools Champion, John Coghlan, took the win on this occasion. A little bit more experience may have told for Simon but he is learning all the time and improving week by week. He'll bounce back from this run, we have no doubt. Other Lucan results have not been received yet but we look forward to hearing how our other stars -- Sinead Dowling, Liam Townsend and Conor McCrossan amongst them -- have fared.
On Wed 25th April, Lucan athletes kicked off their track season at the Dublin Graded Meet in Irishtown Stadium, Ringsend. Colm O'Connor picked up where he left off from last season when he produced another good run in the 800m. This time he was 4th in the 'C' section 800m with a time of 2:12.38. Stephen McCarthy made a welcome return to track racing after a quiet season or two. This time he was 4th in the 'D' section 800m in a time of 2:22.66. Stephen has always improved a lot with races so he should gain a lot of fitness as the season progresses. His best time of 2:00.66 dates back to 2003. No doubt both Colm and Stephen will post times in the 2:05 or faster range this summer. Michael Dunne just can't stop posting personal best times this April, not that we're complaining!! This time the distance was 3000m. Michael placed 3rd in 9:53.0, a big improvement from his previous best (10:26). Well done to all on a good start to the summer.

On Sun 22nd April, Conor Mc Gee placed first on his debut in the 2km Steeplechase in the Walton A.C open meet in Walton-On-Thames. In conditions of 20+ degrees, a versatile Conor recorded a blistering 6.25.01 for the distance. Well done
Conor.
On Tues Apr 17th, Lucan Harriers hosted the first of the Summer Series Meet and Train 2 Mile Road Races. Lucan ladies having already won the Gold Category of the Winter series had a great number of athletes turning out and producing some very fine performances indeed. Derval McCarthy is going from strength to strength and blasted out a fine performance placing 12th in the 100+ field. Débutante Miriam showed her promise as she took 21st postion with Una just behind in 27th position. Bernie Stapleton placed 32nd, while Emer Mc Carthy placed (39th), followed by Myra Nolan (40th) and new member Fiona in 41st position. This is a very strong team performance and an excellent start to the Summer Series, with all the athletes placing in the first half of the field. Well done also to Eileen O'Brien, Maisie McGlone, Valerie, Ann Mc Gee, Bernie Doyle and Evelyn Mc Mahon who also produced some great performances on the day. Congratulations to all, and to coach Brendan Maher for his fine organisation and input on the day.

On another cracking day, Ladies Captain Bernie Stapleton ran very well and was first home for Lucan (time TBC). Bernie Doyle enjoyed a good run (58.27) and was followed by new member Kim Kilduff, Carina Mc Goldrick and Barbara Whelan. Well done ladies, it is great to see the good work is paying off!

On Sat Apr 14th, David Keogh captured a fantastic silver medal in the U19 800m at the National Indoor Championships in Nenagh. Although David ran a very tough heat to qualify the same day, he still managed to produce a marvellous performance to take a silver medal in a time of 2:00.88. David was well clear of third but had to yield this time to, friend and rival, the in-form Anthony Leighio from Tallaght A.C. David, who has been coached over the years by Ann McGee, Conor McGee and now Fintan Mc Gee, is developing into a fine athlete and can be very pleased as he has put in some very hard work over the winter. With the outdoor season now upon us, David can look forward to even more of same!

On Sat Apr 14th, Harriers latest recruit, John Canny led the way for Lucan in the Dublin City Council-sponsored BHAA 4 Mile road race in St Anne's Park. On a glorious morning, John clocked 22.22 for the distance and placed 18th. No stranger to athletics, Canny has four marathons under his belt and is a great addition to the Harriers setup. Michael Dunne was hot on his heels as he placed 20th, while carding his third p.b in 4 weeks (22.26). Although pleased, Michael will be looking to improve on this. Brian Brunton also ran very well (25:56) and is showing good form. Stephen Rynne (26:56) and Jim Dwyer (30:43) also had good runs on a very enjoyable day.

On Sun Apr 8th, a large number of Lucan Harriers athletes turned out for the prestigious Dunboyne 4 mile road race. Due to unforeseen circumstances, Lucan Harriers, unfortunately, were unable to defend their senior men’s team title they took last year. However, they still managed to be represented by some very solid individual performances.
In the mens section, Michael Dunne placed 34th out of a 500 strong field and ran 22.42 for the 4 miles. With nothing to lose, Michael went out extremely quick, clocking just under 10.40 for the first two miles and who despite hitting the
dreaded “wall” soon after, held on to his position, recorded a new personal best and beat last year's time for the course by 25secs. In his first race ever, Ciaran Murtagh ran 27mins for 4 mile and no doubt will improve on this rapidly over the coming
summer. Gerry Martin and Jim Dwyer also enjoyed their runs and as ever, put in solid performances. In the ladies section, Liz Arkins clocked an impressive 28.55 while, club chairperson, Eileen O' Brien showed she is in great form clocking 29.40 for the 4-mile distance. Also hot at the moment is Bernie Stapleton who ran 29:51. Ann McGee ran well (time to be confirmed) followed by Susan Devaney (38min) and Barbara Whelan (38min) who are always improving and show no signs of stopping!

On Sun Apr 1st, our men's Senior team was 5th and our Masters men's team was 11th at the National Road Relay Championships in Raheny. These were two more fine performances from our men's teams. The format for the Senior men's race is the lead-off runner covers 2 laps first, then the next runner on the team covers 1 lap, then the next runner covers 3 laps, then finally the anchor leg covers 2 laps -- the road lap in Raheny is measured at just over a mile, is relatively flat and so is considered ideal for road relays and ,as such, has been the venue for the National Road Relays for the last number of years. On Sunday, our Senior men's team combined youth and experience to lift the team to fifth place. This result bettered last year's 6th place finish. This time, Lucan were led off by 17 year old David Keogh, who produced a good run (time 10:29) in the 2 lap leg. 18 year old Simon Doyle
took over and produced a fantastic run, clocking 4:46 for the 1 lap. Conor McGee pulled back a few places with a solid 15:05 clocking on the 3 lap stage, and Fintan McGee, just back from injury, brought the team home with a 9:59 clocking for his two laps, passing three teams dramtaically in the late stages to edge Lucan into 5th place in the final quarter mile of the 8 mile race. The combined team time was 40 mins 19 seconds. This was a different approach to last year when Lucan remained in the top 4 positions for almost 7 miles, before finally being overtaken by two teams late in the race. This year, the first six places were filled by Clonliffe Harriers, Raheny Shamrocks, Rathfarnham W.S.A.F., Tallaght A.C, Lucan Harriers A.C. and East Down A.C. In the masters race, the format is 1 lap, 2 laps and then 1 lap. Colm O'Connor led off in the one lap with a fine 5:09, before handing over to Joe Corcoran who split an 11:36 for the two laps. Stephen McCarthy anchored the squad with a 5:29 effort for the 1 lap. The combined team time was 22:14, good for 11th place overall. This was just one spot down on last year's result for our masters team, despite missing a key member of the squad, men's captain Tommy Buggle, through injury. These results have consolidated Lucan's position as one of the emerging clubs in the country. Well done to everyone and thanks to all our supporters for being in such good voice on the day. The cheers really helped our teams dig deep.

On Sun Mar 18th, Junior athlete Simon Doyle won 1500m bronze in his first ever National Junior Indoor Championship in Nenagh.
On Sun Mar 18th Junior athlete Simon Doyle won 1500m bronze in his first ever National Junior Indoor Championship in Nenagh. Not even a year into the sport, Doyle found himself shoulder to shoulder against some of the country's finest young talents. Simon didn’t even flinch and in what was a tactical race, showed total lack of respect, made up his own rules and took home a bronze medal for his troubles in a time of 4.24 (p.b by 17secs). With 700m to go, Simon made a courageous break on Murphy (1st) and Lombard (2nd) but these guys covered their angle very well. And yes, you could argue that the only thing separating gold from bronze here was inexperience, however bearing in mind that there were ten athletes chasing, it is safe to say courage was the order of the day. Fantastic running, Simon!

On Sat Mar 17th Lucan Harriers athletes kick started the days celebrations with some fine performances in the KBC St Patrick's Day 4 Mile Road Race in the Phoenix Park. A very strong headwind didn’t help matters but Harriers athletes Bernie Stapleton, Vinny Murtagh, Michael Dunne and Ann McGee braved the odds, and in doing so, managed to record some personal bests for themselves. Ann McGee had an excellent run to take top prize in her age category in a time of 38:30. Ann devotes a lot of time to coaching the juvenile athletes so it's good to see her having a day off from coaching!! Ladies Captain Stapleton showed she is flying form at the moment as she shattered last years PB by over two and half minutes. Bernie clocked 31.47 for the distance and has not stopped improving. Bernie has also taken time out to coach Lucan Harriers ever-increasing meet and train group, and given that attitudes are contagious, this group are already showing huge signs of improvement. Michael Dunne and Vincent Murtagh represented the men’s section and in what was described as a "dogfight till the end", Dunne recorded a PB of 22.52 for the 4 Mile distance and also placed an impressive 38th overall. Michael’s focus is now on the track for the summer where he is looking forward to some more good results. Vincent Murtagh took a minute and a half last year’s time with a time of 27:16 this time and as always was very modest about his fine performance. We look forward to more from Vincent.

On Sat Mar 10th and Sun Mar 11th, Lucan Harriers' young athletes took a rake of medals in the Dublin Indoor Championships in Santry. David Keogh recorded his double, taking a silver medal in the men's U18 1500m on Sat. In a very fast race run in slightly breezy conditions, David placed second in a huge new personal best time of 4 mins 5 seconds, a full 8 seconds better than his previous best. Day two was wet and dull, however, this did not deter Keogh as he proved that every cloud really does have a silver lining. David completed his double in fine style, and took another silver, this time in the 800m, clocking 1.59.8 for the distance, only a fraction outside his personal best. Great to see David bounce back from a calf injury, which had him sidelined for 2-3 weeks
from mid January. Sean Townsend also had a fantastic weekend, adding a brace of silvers to his collection. Sean placed 2nd in the u10 500m and the long jump. In the u15 60m, Stuart Roche took 2nd place; meanwhile Tara Andrews took silver in the u11 long jump. Orla O’ Farrell and Sinead Dowling rounded up the medals, Orla taking bronze in the u16 long jump, while Dowling completed the hat trick of doubles, taking silver in the u18 60m and 200m. Other fine performances came from Cloe and Barry Mc Grane, Luke Hanlon, Rachel Briggs and Juliette Sejan who was just
outside the medals placing 4th in the u 13 Girls long jump. These young talents can be all be very proud of their performances. Well done to all on this weekend's achievements.

Next up for Lucan was Conor McGee in the men's senior 12km event. Conor placed 18th overall adding to some good solid results this winter. Both athletes were very happy with their runs and are looking forward now to the track season.

Lorraine Heffernan (78.42) and Bernie Stapleton (79.29) were next and both of these athletes smashed their pb’s, Heffernan by 4mins and Stapleton by 6. Senior male and experienced vet Jim Dwyer clocked (81min) for the 10 miles, with Maise McGlone (93), Sinead Murphy (94), Rian Gonzalez, Lorna and Ann McGee rounding up another day of fine performances.

Comiskey took the two-mile course on with true grit and determination and is really starting to come into her own this season. In another fine performance, Derval McCarthy was next for Lucan and was followed by an ever improving Lorraine Heffernan and Eithne Reid. Well done to the athletes and their coach Brendan Maher on the improvements shown this year.

On Sat 24th Feb, four Lucan Athletes took part in the BHAA sponsored Garda 4 miles Cross Country in the Phoenix Park. This is renowned as a very difficult and unforgiving course, but that did not stop harriers athletes, Michael Dunne and Colm O'Connor from rising to the occasion. In his first Cross Country race in just under three months, Michael went out hard from the start with O’ Connor sitting comfortably on his shoulder. Together they worked hard and grinded down the 160 plus opposition to finish very strongly, Michael took 30th place (24:27) with Colm just behind in 41st position (25:14). These guys are in fantastic form at the moment and things look very promising from a Harriers perspective. Vinny Murtagh (28:14) and Jim Dwyer (32:12) finished further down the field and can be both very pleased with their performances.
On Tue 20th Feb, Hilary McGee and Jim Dwyer ran in the ALSAA Winter Track League mile race at the Aer Lingus Sports Complex. Hilary posted a season's best time of 5 mins 49 seconds to place second woman overall. Jim also posted a season's best 6 mins 53 seconds. Well done to both on fine runs.
On Sat 17th Feb, Conor McGee placed 9th in the 3000m at the National Indoor Championships in Belfast. Conor recorded a time of 8:44.18, just a half second outside of his best time from last season, so good to see things are going well for Conor.
On Wed 7th Feb, Simon Doyle placed 25th in the u20 race at the Leinster Schools Cross Country Championships in D.C.U. Simon had a very good run over the 6km course and this will stand him in good stead for outdoors. It's been a long cross country season so Simon will take a bit of a breather before getting ready for track.

On Sun Feb 4th, Lucan Harriers ladies produced some excellent results in the Meet & Train 2 Mile Cross Country Challenge in Irishtown. With many of these athletes on the back of a grueling 5 mile road race in Raheny last week, the ladies were back in action in Irishtown where confidence completely overshadowed fatigue. In a large field, Derval Mc Carthy produced yet another fantastic performance storming into 14th position. Derval was followed closely by Freda Comiskey 19th, Eithne Reid 20th, Bernie Stapleton 27th and Lorraine Heffernan 29th. Although positions have yet to be verified, we can confirm that Sinead, Celine, Rian Gonzalez, Suzi and Yvonne completed what was yet another very good day for Lucan Harriers. Well done ladies!
On Sat Feb 3rd, Lucan athletes took part in the BHAA NCF 5 Mile cross-country meet in Santry. Rapidly improving over distance, Colm O Connnor was first home for Lucan finishing well inside the front half of the group in 44th position. Brian Brunton followed, who despite an error regarding the amount of laps, finished quite strongly. The next Lucan singlets in belonged to Vincent Murtagh and Jim Dwyer who over a tough course, both enjoyed good races. Great running lads!
Jan 2007
On Sun Jan 28th, Conor McGee placed 5th overall and several p.b.'s were recorded at the Raheny 5 Mile Road Race. Conor McGee led the charge for Lucan, finishing 5th overall in a time of 25:05 for the distance in cold and windy conditions. Jim Dwyer ran 38.54 for the distance and in the ladies section there were some fine performances too. Running very well at the moment, Freda Comiskey was first home for Lucan in a time of 36.09 (only 7 secs outside a P.B), followed by Bernie Stapleton (36.54) who smashed her previous time for the distance by a minute and a half. Bernie has run some very tough races lately and it is quite apparent that these are paying off. Lorraine Heffernan also had a cracking run (38.07) and took a minute off her P.B. Next in was Amber Nugent (39.00) followed by Ann Mc Gee. Given that this is only the start of the year, it is a very
positive sign to see so many athletes running this well. Well done to all!
On Thur Jan 25th, Simon Doyle placed an excellent 7th in the West Leinster Schools U20 Cross Country Championships. This was a great run from Simon over the 5km course. West Leinster by tradition is a very strong region and this time proved to be no exception with National U19 xc Champion John Coghlan taking the win ahead of a slew of top athletes. Simon has made rapid progress since joing the club in October. He now moves forward to the Leinster Schools Championships in a few weeks' time. Great running, Simon.
On Thur Jan 25th, there was another very good turnout for our open mile race. Offaly U21 GAA star, John Mullen, was first in a time of 5:52 followed by club members Hilary McGee (5:58) and Derval Mc Carthy. This is an open race, which means anyone can enter. So if you fancy giving it a bash why not pop down and see us. All standards are welcome and the next one takes place on Thurs 8th of Feb at Lucan track at 7pm. We look forward to seeing you there.
On Sun Jan 21st, Colm O'Connor placed 5th in his category at the National Masters Indoor Championships over 1500m. Against a strong field, Colm showed he is in cracking form at the moment finishing in a time of 4.44.68 for the distance. This is Colm's first competitive indoor race for a while, and his best result on the National stage. He looks set to have a very promising season ahead of him. Fantastic running, Colm.
On Sun Jan 21st, Conor McGee placed 15th in the UK Cross Challenge 9km cross country in Cardiff. This is Conor's first competitive outing since his marathon in December and since relocating to London. Good to see him running so well.
On Sat Jan 20th, Jim Dwyer and Bernie Stapleton represented Lucan in the BHAA Cherryfield Cross Country in Templeogue. Conditions were tough, but as ever Jim worked hard to produce a
yet another solid performance in 40:26 for the 5 miles distance. Representing the ladies over 2 miles was Bernie Stapleton, who again in the cold, wet and generally quite unpleasant conditions produced a fine run. Bernie placed very well finishing just outside the top 30 in a time of 16:06 for the 2 miles. Well done to both.
On Sat Jan 20th, Fintan Mc Gee placed an excellent 2nd in the National Scottish Indoor Championship 3,000m. Fintan clocked a time of 8:54.06 for the distance despite being under the weather with a heavy cold. This result matches Fintan's second place at last year's Scottish Indoor 3,000m and is yet another great performance from Fintan. Well done Fintan.
On Sat Jan 20th, Hilary Mc Gee won the Fit 4 Life Road 2 miles at Cork I.T. in Bishopstown. Hilary recorded a time of 12:51 and she is clearly coming back into very good form again. Hilary should also be commended for the great work she is doing in organising Fit 4 Life Leagues in Cork. She is making a very positive contribution to athletics in Cork. Well done, Hilary.

On Sun Jan 7th, Derval McCarthy and Freda Comiskey both placed top 15 in the Meet and Train Cross Country race in Griffeen Park. The ground was very soft underfoot but this did not stop our women's team led by top class runs by Derval McCarthy (13th, 14:25) and Freda Comiskey (14th, 14:28). Eithne Reid (18th, 14:57) and Lorraine Heffernan (26th, 15:30) followed up well to contribute to a very good team result on the muddy 2 mile course.
