DEDICATED RACE WEBSITE.. includes 2011 results.
This race held in honour of one of the founding members of Lucan Harriers, Tom Byrne, starts and finishes on Esker track in Lucan and is one of the few, if not the only, road race(s) in the country which finishes on a track. This really adds to the atmosphere at the finish since the race is often still undecided as the leaders come onto the track for the final sprint in front of a big crowd.
This 5k is an event for anyone, from fun runners to elite athletes to keep fit enthusiasts to walkers, footballers, joggers, and everyone in between. Our mini marathoners will find this run to be an ideal distance as they continue their running beyond the mini marathon and into the summer months. At the other end of the scale, amongst our previous men's winners have been Gerry Healy (Olympic 'B' standard in the marathon in 2000 -- 2hrs 15min), Cormac Finnerty (Olympian in Atlanta '96, track 5k pb of 13:18 -- no, that's not a typo!!), Pearse Hickey of Raheny Shamrocks, David Byrne of Sportsworld, Lucan Harriers athlete Conor McGee -- twice winner, Mark Ryan of Rathfarnham W.S.A.F. A.C., and Peter Matthews of DSD who has represented Ireland on many occasions at World and European Cross Country Championships including an individual top 25 finishing position in the World Cross Country Championships and a top 10 individual finish in the European Cross Country Championships. Women's champions have included Lucan Harriers' own Niamh Beirne (multiple international for Ireland track and cross country), Emer Martin of Sportsworld and Irish cross country international, Orla O'Mahony of Raheny Shamrocks.
The Tom Byrne Perpetual Trophy for first local male and female athlete is a much sought after prize and with top athletes from various clubs living in the Lucan area, this should be another great year for our race. Come along and support our event. Registration is at our clubhouse (opp SuperQuinn) on the day. Please arrive early to avoid queuing.
